Itsukushima Shrine on Miyajima island has more than 1400 years of history, and is a registered World Heritage Site. The vermillion lacquered shrine, located at the beautiful Itsukushima shrine contrasts the Prussian blue sea and green of the virgin forest, recreating the elegance of the Heian era.
Many visitors from all around the world visit it each year. Because the island itself has been considered sacred, commoners were not allowed to set foot on it throughout much of its history to maintain its purity. To allow pilgrims to approach, the shrine was built like a pier over the water, so that it appeared to float, separate from the land.
